Burton Hawley, 1922-2009

sierra and grandpa hugs for grandpa and grandma the high life burton hawley burt and cindy

Kerrie’s grandfather Burt passed away this past Thursday at 86. He passed away in his sleep, which is about as good as it can get. I don’t think I’ve ever known anyone who has lived life as fully as he did.

God speed, Burt.

We just learned about Burt’s death from Bob Fournier yesterday, and now from the wonderful Mack family. Burt was a pilot in the 23rd PRSqdn replacing some of us originals who were going home in mid 1944. Then I knew him only a bit, but got to know him and Mardell much better at the reunions. He was a buoyant personality that lifted all the ships around him.

Thanks for the good times Burt.

It was just recently that I learned of Burt’s passing. I was stunned and not prepared for the news. Burt was a super guy and I enjoyed seeing him at each reunion over the years. He will be sorely missed.

Dear Kerrie: You were blessed in the years you spent with your wonderful grandfather. Yes, he was one man in a million. He and my husband, Fernand Marty, served together in World War II in the 23rd Photo Reconnaissance Squadron. Burt hosted several of our yearly reunions, and with his wonderful spirit and sense of humor he was the center of every one of them. Your grandfather was an inspiration to everyone who knew him, and we have all lost someone very precious to us. Thank you for posting these great photos of a very great man. Betty Marty.

I was so saddend to hear of Burts passing. I enjoyed seeing him every year at the 23rd photo recon reunions. My dad Jim Mundhenk and Burt served together and they both flew the P 38′s. I enjoyed his lust for life, and watching the twinkle in his eyes when he would shop for something to take back to Mardell, and he always got the perfect thing! Thank you for posting the awesome pictures, he will be greatly missed. God Bless. Cindy
